The “Back Yard Dog”

“Back Yard Dog” – Article written by: Elly Price, Right on Track K9 Training

Most people don’t realize that leaving a dog alone or unattended in a yard for long periods of time or sometimes even short periods can lead to unwanted behavioral problems.

Over the last several years, during training, a common question people will ask me is, “why doesn’t my dog pay attention to me when I give him a command?” Usually through our conversation I will learn that their dog’s daily routine includes being left alone in their yard for long periods of time.

Dogs are naturally pack animals that would normally have a place within their pack, which will determine certain behaviors and give them a kind of fulfillment. A dog that is left on his own without certain needs being met by other pack members will learn to fulfill these needs on his own. So, if you find yourself wondering why your dog is constantly barking, digging, howling, charging the fence, or displaying other unwanted behaviors, it is most likely something trainers call, “self rewarding” behavior. Basically, they are trying to find ways to deal with pent up energy or stress anxiety.

RightOnTrackK9TrainingAgain, dogs are pack animals that have a need to feel they belong to a group, which in the absence of other dogs becomes their human owner. Dogs need to have their human owner’s companionship and humans need to provide their dog with structure. Without this relationship a dog will learn to become independent. They can also become anxious and stressed, which in turn can lead to their becoming aggressive and less responsive to your commands.

A “back yard dog” is sometimes difficult to train because the bond that is created when a human interacts with their dog is missing. Outside of spending down time with your dog you need to interact with your dog through playtime, like a game of “fetch”, or taking daily walks together. This interaction will make your dog feel he has a place within your pack and will cause him to be more responsive to your commands.

Of course there are other factors that play a part in good leadership, but that is a topic for another day.

Happy Howie’s Visits Colorado

In late April, Happy Howie’s decided to take a trip to Colorado to visit independent retailers in two (Denver and Colorado Springs) of the 17 Best U.S. Cities for Dogs (as voted by Estately Blog; http://blog.estately.com/2013/05/17-best-u-s-cities-for-dogs/). After seeing 40 independent retailers in 4 days, we a few things to bark about.

It doesn’t get any better than beautiful spring weather, mountains in the background, All Natural Dog Treats, and of course, dogs! Dogs, dogs, and more dogs! The neighborhoods were lively with pet parents walking and playing with their best friends. From Denver all the way down to Colorado Springs, many dogs were enjoying the parks, dog-friendly coffee shops, and boutique pet supplies stores.

One of the many aspects of these cities that we were fascinated by is the ability to set trends in motion that carry over to the rest of the country.
One of the retailers, Wag n Wash natural food & bakery in Colorado Springs, was a one-stop-shop design to make a pet parent’s life easier and spoil dogs. The store, like several others, has dog wash and grooming stations with a selection of natural foods and treats to fit the need of the most demanding pet parent. But, what really set this store apart was the in-house bakery. Wag n Wash’s bakery was equipped with a bakery and a baker hand rolling and cutting cookies for dogs. Before you get a chance to take in the wide aisles and bright colors, your senses are drawn to the smell of freshly baked treats. There’s no doubt stores throughout the country will pick up on this!

This was just one store among many other retailers in Denver and Colorado that deserve praise for helping to put their cities on the list of the 17 Best U.S. cities for Dogs. After 4 days and 40 stores, our paws are super tired!

Saving Dogs and Detainees One Life at a Time

Happy Howie’s is honored to announce we have become proud supporters of The Georgia Department of Corrections “Rescued” program!

What exactly is this program?

10923301_10153217845339451_5343956647857106800_oFounded in June of 2012, the “Rescued” program began through the Georgia Department of Corrections at the Colwell Probation and Detention Center in Blairsville, Georgia. This program aims to help dogs obtained by animal control centers become more adoptable.

The “Rescued” program places dogs with detainees 24/7, while Cold Nose College works with the detainees on training basic foundation skills and good canine manners. Cold Nose College’s goal is 10857385_10153217843609451_7838131220200311477_o to make the dogs more adoptable, while teaching detainees positive reinforcement training skills.

Cold Nose College has found that the dogs in training really respond to our Happy Howie’s Meat Rolls—especially the Turkey. Therefore, in conjunction with Mountain Pets who will be providing the Turkey rolls at 50% off retail, we are happy to match the purchase of every roll 1:1!

10668935_10153217842189451_7127808989908094284_oWith the budget of the program, we estimate Cold Nose College obtaining nearly 30 All Natural Gourmet Meat Rolls from Mountain Pets, Happy Howie’s will match by providing an additional 30 rolls. Approximately 60 All Natural Meat Rolls for such a great cause!

We thank Mountain Pets and Cold Nose College for including us in such a unique and awesome program. It is our hope that each dog is able to find his or her forever home through the “Rescued” program.

Southeast Pet Open House

Congratulations to Southeast Pet on celebrating their 40th anniversary!

At Happy Howie’s, we have grown to love Southeast Pet—specifically their people and what they stand for. During the past few years the pet industry has seen an incredible amount of consolidation among distributors of pet supplies. This has generated a lot of controversy, along with questions regarding the future of independent distributors in the pet industry. Despite this, Southeast Pet has held strong and prospered as one of the last independent distributors in the country!

The same can be said about their open house. Last week hundreds of retailers gathered at the Cobb Galleria showplace in Atlanta, Georgia, to enjoy good food, music, and products from dozens of exhibitors at the Southeast Pet Open House. These exhibitors experienced record-setting traffic from booth to booth.

As always, our favorite part is when the retailers that carry our treats, stop by and tell us how well the treats sell in their stores. These loyal retailers help to educate others that stop by our booth, whom don’t carry Happy Howie’s, by emphasizing the overall success of our All Natural Treats in their stores.

Thank you Southeast Pet for hosting the successful event! Happy Howie’s is happy to have been an exhibitor, and proud to have been among the dozens of successful manufacturers attending distributors representing the pet industry.

Up next—the Middle West Open House in Chicago and the Frontier Open House at the Suburban Showcase in Novi. We hope to see you there!

Happy Howie’s Wins MEDC’s Pure Michigan Business Connect Contest “2014 Making It in Michigan”!

2014 Making It in Michigan – October 2014, Happy Howie’s entered the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) Pure Michigan Business Connect Contest “Making it in Michigan” with the entry form essay of 500 words or less explaining why we feel Michigan has helped our company grow and prosper.

Admittedly it was very difficult for owner, David Collado, to describe Michigan’s help with the abundance of resources that have helped Happy Howie’s grow in less than 500 words! Great features such as Michigan Web Account Manager (MIWAM) and Michigan Business One Stop, has allowed Happy Howie’s to spend more time focusing on what we do best—making the world’s best dog treats right here in Detroit.

“Being in the state of Michigan has had a priceless influence on the company right from the beginning. The early adopters of our vision were the countless men and women who own small retailers of pet supplies located throughout Michigan. In the middle of the recession, they objected to taking any risk by adding new and untested products. However, these retailers were open to the idea of adding the dog treats of a Michigan startup to their store’s offering because they were passionate about restoring Michigan’s economy. Their faith paid off. Today, Happy Howie’s is one of the best selling dog treats in Michigan and, thanks to all the dog owners in the state, Michigan alone accounts for 10% of all our sales…” —David Collado

As winners, Happy Howie’s won an iPad Air, a 2–3 minute promotional video of our company and its Michigan experience, along with a sponsored content article published with MLive Media Group:

“… As the winner of the recent Making It In Michigan Contest, which was conducted on behalf of Pure Michigan Business Connect, Happy Howie’s, located in Detroit, was started to make the world’s greatest dog treats with all natural ingredients and mouth-watering flavors your dog will love. So what makes these treats stand out from any other treats on the shelves? They are made without any corn, wheat, soy, artificial flavors, artificial colors, or artificial preservatives. Instead, they include ingredients like real beef, turkey, lamb, and more. They are made the same way jerky is made for people to consume, too, and smell like real savory meats, not artificially flavored dough. They are the highest quality and absolutely safe for your pet…” — Laura Neiser

SuperZoo Experience – Las Vegas, NV

Here is what I experienced at SuperZoo…

SuperZoo is one of the largest trade shows in the United States for Pet products. It is as large as the Detroit Auto Show. Superzoo was held in Las Vegas, NV at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center. During this event, you can see new products, new companies, vendors, exhibitors, as well as distributors and manufacturers. This convention takes place for three days, with over one thousand booths.

It was my first time to come and work a show this large. Seeing all the different booths and all the people, it can be intimidating especially when you work for a small company with a big heart in providing dogs with all natural treats, which are made in the United States.

For many of the exhibitors they have been doing shows this large for years, this was our second time attending SuperZoo. It was amazing to get an experience like this and to grow with my company. We took pride in making our booth look amazing. We handmade sample bags that included a packet of flyers as well as a mini (10 oz.) gourmet roll.

It is a remarkable feeling to work with Happy Howie’s and be a part of this journey. I enjoyed telling customers, vendors and others what we do in Detroit, MI at Happy Howie’s.

We are a small one of a kind dog treat factory. We stand behind our core values, and work to provide a fresh quality made product. Working with my boss David Collado was great he showed me a greater appreciation for the work that we do. It brought a smile to my face when I was done giving customers my short presentation. The customers walked away with information, samples, as well as being happy about a quality USA made dog treat. David and I worked as team.

I enjoyed learning about this trade show as well as meeting all the creative and talented people we work with across the United States. I look forward to attending next year’s SuperZoo in July.
